CMPD officer charged with DWI in Montgomery County crash put on unpaid leave
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who was charged with a DWI following a crash in Montgomery County Sunday was put on unpaid leave, the department said.
Officer Matt Wilson was off duty on Sept. 21 when he was charged by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The incident is being investigated by internal affairs, CMPD said in a press release. Wilson has worked at CMPD since May 2020 and is assigned to the North Division.
Wilson is not the first CMPD officer to be charged with a DWI this year.
In April, Officer Stephen Brown was charged with a DWI and is accused of driving while more than double the legal alcohol limit in York County. Officer Jonathan Nicholas, who was pulled over for speeding in Burke County, was charged with a DWI in June.
Police Chief Johnny Jennings included a statement in the department’s press release following Wilson’s arrest.
“Any behavior that undermines the integrity of our agency or erodes the trust of the public is unacceptable,” Jennings said. “We expect our officers to abide by the same laws and principles they are sworn to enforce, and we remain unwavering in our responsibility to serve this community with transparency, accountability and honor.”
