An uptown club that was the site of a deadly September shootout has voluntarily pulled its alcohol permits, the Mecklenburg Alcoholic Beverage Control Board said Monday.

The Brooklyn Nightclub and Lounge, located at 225 North Caldwell St., pulled its alcohol permits on Sept. 29 and indicated the weekend prior it wouldn’t be open, Cherise Walker, chief of staff to the commission, said in a email to The Charlotte Observer.

On Sept. 21, a week before the permits were pulled, Steven Lee Wheeler, 26, was shot and killed in a shootout between two groups.

The nightclub and other areas of uptown have drawn attention and scrutiny for other shootings, at times in the overnight hours as nightclubs are closing.

In the early morning of July 5, two men were killed and one was hospitalized after a shooting in that same block of Caldwell Street. And in March 2022, a man shot at police with a rifle in the parking lot outside of the nightclub. Tyler James Drew, then of Rock Hill, pleaded guilty in a deal in August 2023 to possession of a firearm by a felon and appears to have served about one year in state prison, according to court records.

Alcoholic Beverage Control Board records show the Brooklyn Lounge had permits for malt beverages, unfortified and fortified wines, and mixed beverages. They’ve all been cancelled, the records say.

The Charlotte Observer called a number listed on the nightclub’s social media for comment, but the person who answered ended the call without saying anything.
