Woman accused of stealing baby in southwest Charlotte

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police detained a woman Saturday after she was accused of running away with a 10-month-old baby, police said.

Sharlornai Reid, 22, was arrested Saturday in Charlotte on an unrelated larceny charge from Buncombe County, but CMPD plans to charge her with child abduction and assault with a deadly weapon when she gets out of the hospital, police said.

Reid is accused of stealing a woman’s child after asking to hold it on Fawnbrook Lane. CMPD said Reid and the child’s mother continued talking after the mother handed the baby over, but then Reid took off running and got in a car.

Police said the mother unsuccessfully tried to stop Reid from driving off.

CMPD said Reid and the baby were found in the parking lot of a business at 3200 Wilkinson Boulevard and she was arrested on a larceny charge from Buncombe County.

The baby was returned to its family unharmed.

Reid was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.
