Second person dies at hospital days after northwest Charlotte shooting

A 34-year-old man who police said was shot last week by a man accused of kidnapping a woman died on Sunday at a hospital.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police identified the victim as Shabazz Mesiah Grant, 34, who was the second person police believe was shot by Joseph Andrade, 28, on Oct. 23.

Police found Grant and another man, Justin Westbrook Carlton, 38, with gunshot wounds while responding to a call about a shooting in the 300 block of North Hoskins Road . Carlton died shortly after being taken to the hospital.

Police received another call in the same area about a kidnapping and home invasion . Police chased Andrade and said they spotted him driving a vehicle with the kidnapped woman in the passenger seat before he crashed at the intersection of Freedom Drive and West Morehead Street.

Police said Andrade fired at police cars during the chase, then ran after the crash before police killed him.

None of the officers were injured; the woman was also uninjured.
