A driver was in the act of trying to run down two deputies when he was fatally shot in his truck, according to investigators in North Carolina.

It happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, outside a home in the Marston area of Richmond County, about an 80-mile drive east from Charlotte.

Deputies went to the home to find a man linked to a domestic dispute, but got no response from inside, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

“As they were leaving, they encountered the individual on a private road leading to the home. The suspect eventually stopped his truck in his driveway, backed up, and rammed his vehicle into one of the deputies’ patrol vehicles, damaging it,” the sheriff’s office says.

“He drove off, but then rammed the deputy’s vehicle a second time during the encounter, rendering it inoperable. During the incident, the suspect attempted to run over the deputies, prompting them to engage in gunfire in defense of their lives.”

The suspect died at the scene. His identity his not been released.

One of the deputies was injured and was treated and released by a hospital, officials said.

“The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the incident. Both deputies are on administrative leave in accordance with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office policies,” the sheriff’s office said.
