Man sentenced for 2013 Charlotte killing

A judge sentenced a Charlotte man for second-degree murder Monday after a jury found him guilty on Friday.

Anthonio Farrar, 23, was sentenced to at least 18 years in prison for shooting Benjamin McDaniel, 19, on New Year’s Day in 2013, the district attorney’s office said Monday.

The attorney’s office said Farrar and his codefendant, Dontae Torrance, met with McDaniel to buy marijuana and gave him $500. McDaniel and his friends confronted the pair and accused them of giving them counterfeit bills. A friend of McDaniel hit Farrar and Farrar shot him in the chest.

McDaniel then fled and Farrar shot him in the back, which would kill him. Torrance fled and the other shooting victim survived.
