Victim in Charlotte light rail stabbing arrested on unrelated assault charge

The man who was stabbed on a Charlotte light rail Blue line train on Dec. 5 was arrested on unrelated assault charges on Wednesday.

Kenyon Dobie, 24, was accused of punching his pregnant partner on Oct. 18 and causing a facial fracture, according to arrest warrants filed in court Thursday. He was also accused of threatening to kill the woman and her children, and another person.

Dobie was charged with assault on a female, assault on a pregnant woman, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, and three counts of communicating threats, according to records. He was also charged with assault causing serious bodily injury, a felony.

At Dobie’s first court appearance Thursday, Assistant Mecklenburg District Attorney Sarah Remshifski said the incident took place on Oct. 19. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police met with the pregnant woman who accused Dobie of assault, the prosecutor said.

The woman was bleeding heavily from her right eye and nose, and her left eye was swollen shut. She said she was too afraid to talk and accused Dobie of threatening to kill her and her children, the prosecutor said. Dobie, who appeared in court via video on Thursday, closed his eyes and shook his head a couple of times as the prosecutor recounted the incident.

The woman was taken to the hospital and told police she and Dobie had been arguing when she tried to separate herself.

She accused Dobie of throwing furniture at her and hitting her in the face with a closed fist. The prosecutor said the woman told police she hit her head against the wall and lost consciousness. When she woke up, Dobie was gone, she told police. That’s when she called 911, the prosecutor said.

Dobie was stabbed by another man on a Charlotte light rail train on Friday and had been in the hospital. On a GoFundMe page started by Dobie, he said he had a tube in his chest removing blood from his lungs. He was in the hospital recovering before he was arrested by CMPD on Wednesday.

As of Thursday, Dobie’s GoFundMe page raised $104,969, surpassing the initial goal of $25,000.

District Court Judge Keith Smith set Dobie’s bond at $2 million for the felony charge and $60,000 for the misdemeanor charges on Thursday. The judge also ordered Dobie to wear an electronic monitor.

Oscar Solarzano, an undocumented immigrant from Honduras who had been twice deported, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the Dec. 5 attack on Dobie.
