Union County couple killed in head on, drunk driving collision near Baltimore

A couple from Union County were killed in a drunk driving crash early Sunday morning in Baltimore, according to a Maryland State Police press release.

Venkata Asha Khanna Appana, 48, and Krishna Kishore Koti Kalapudi, 49, both of Marvin, N.C., were killed in a head-on collision. Police say Michael Coupet, 34, of Baltimore, was driving the wrong way on Interstate 95.

The press release said charges against Coupet included vehicular manslaughter and homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

The crash occurred at 2:45 a.m. Appana, the driver, was dead at the scene. Kalapudi died after being transported to a hospital. The couple’s 21-year-old and 16-year-old children were injured in the crash and transported to hospitals, the press release said.

Coupet was being held at Howard County Detention Center without bond.
