Charlotte man sentenced for stealing nearly $6 million from investors

A Charlotte man who used nearly $6 million of investor money on personal expenses and to “make Ponzi-style payments” will spend the next six years in prison, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina said in a news release Tuesday.

Wynn A.D. Charlebois, 55, “used his past employment at a reputable hedge fund to con his victims into trusting him,” U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson said. His companies — WC Private, Wilcox Hybrid and Damon Investments — defrauded more than 40 people, including friends, family, fellow church members and veterans. The Securities and Exchange Commission in 2022 said Charlebois used investor money to cover his child’s university tuition and pay for family trips to Colorado and Florida.

He must pay more than $5.7 million in restitution and serve two years of supervised release, U.S. District Court Judge David Norton ordered.
