Gastonia police shot a man inside a convenience store Saturday evening who later died, according to a department press release.

The shooting, which involved two officers, occurred at 5:54 p.m. inside Jakob’s Food Mart, located at 1406 Gaston Avenue. Both officers were put on administrative leave.

Chad Flowers, a spokesperson for the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, on Monday identified the man killed as Derrick Manigault, 43, on Monday afternoon.

Gastonia police would not release the names of the two officers. Flowers said the names of the officers would be released after they’ve been interviewed.

Police released another statement Tuesday morning.

The two officers were in plain clothes doing a “compliance check” inside the store when Manigault entered “agitated,” a press release said. Manigault waved his gun in the air and made threatening movements, the press release said. The officers responded by shooting Manigault, who died at the hospital.

Police also released one piece of evidence: A photo of the scene with a gray SUV parked in front of the store.

The SBI is investigating.
