Police investigating three weekend homicides in Charlotte; one arrest made

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating three homicides that occurred over the weekend, according to press releases.

One man was shot and killed during Sunday’s winter storm at 8:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Elmin Street, Maj. Stephen Fischbach said in a video on X.

CMPD said officers attempted to save the man, but he died from his wounds.

Police identified the victim as John Glenn Martinez, 26, on Monday. Police did not say if the shooting occurred in a home, business or outside. Charlotte Observer news partner WSOC reported Martinez was delivering food at the time of the shooting.

Police investigated the homicides of two people on Saturday, one of which led to an arrest, according to press releases.

A man was shot and killed in the 4300 block of Central Avenue at 3:30 a.m., CMPD said. The man had gunshot wounds and was dead at the scene. He has not been identified.

A 23-year-old woman later died at a hospital after arriving with a life-threatening injury on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., the department said.

Police identified the victim as Serenity Tate, 23. CMPD did not say how she was injured, which happened in the 14000 block of Whistling Teal Drive.

Demontrez Breelove, 26, was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held at Mecklenburg County Jail on no bond, according to jail records.

CMPD has released information about six homicides so far in 2026.
