CMPD says University traffic enforcement operation yields 64 citations in 2 hours

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a new traffic enforcement operation at a busy intersection in the University City neighborhood yielded 64 citations in two hours.

Officers were sent to the intersection of W.T. Harris Boulevard and North Tryon Street on Feb. 6 as part Operation Red Zone, a press release said.

The intersection was chosen because of a high number of crashes in the area resulting from red-light violations, CMPD said.

Officers made 54 traffic stops, 41 of which were for failure to stop at a red light. Other charges included six for expired or invalid registration, four for driving without a seatbelt, and three for operating a vehicle with no license.

A CMPD spokesperson said neighborhoods can reach out to a division office or community coordinator to raise traffic concerns in their area.
