CMPD officer hit during ‘street takeover’ suffers minor injury, police say
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was hit by a vehicle while attempting to stop a street takeover, the department said Monday.
The incident occurred Sunday in the 4700 block of Smith Farm Road while officers were arresting people involved in the takeover.
“As officers responded to detain participants, one individual attempted to leave the parking lot in a vehicle and struck an officer, causing minor injuries,” CMPD said in an email Monday. “The driver fled the scene.”
A video on social media showed the officer, who was not named, trying to stop one vehicle that goes around him. He gets rammed by a second vehicle and pushed up on top of the vehicle’s hood. The officer rolls off and lands on his feet.
In the video, the officer appears to be pointing at the vehicle with something in his hand. CMPD did not answer if the officer drew his weapon and pointed it at the driver.
CMPD said the 25-year-old driver was arrested Monday and charged with assault.
“Street takeover events pose significant risks to everyone present, and community members are strongly urged not to attend or participate,” CMPD said. “These gatherings often lead to dangerous, unpredictable situations that can result in serious injury. Involvement in street takeover events could lead to serious penalties including arrest and felony charges.”
