An off-duty police officer is accused of fatally shooting another off-duty officer during a domestic disturbance late Friday, a North Carolina sheriff said Saturday.

Just before 11 p.m., deputies found an officer with a gunshot wound in the 1600 block of Seattle Slew Lane in Hope Mills, according to a statement by Cumberland County Sheriff Johnathan Morgan.

The officer was pronounced dead at the scene, Morgan said. His name is being withheld until his family is notified, the sheriff said.

SBI leads investigation into fatal shooting

Hope Mills is in the Sandhills region of southeastern North Carolina, just south of Fayetteville and about 75 miles from Raleigh and 130 miles from Charlotte.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the circumstances of the shooting, Morgan said

“This is not a random incident, and there appears to be no threat to the public,” the sheriff said.

Sheriff’s investigators urged anyone with information about the shooting to call the SBI at 919-662-4500 or the Crimestoppers anonymous tips line at 910-483-8477.
