8-year-old girl on bicycle dies after colliding with car in Charlotte, CMPD says
An 8-year-old girl was killed when she pedaled her bike out of the yard and collided with a passing car, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
The child has been identified as Nyomi Summers, and investigators say the motorist involved was driving with a revoked license.
The collision happened around 6 p.m. Saturday in the 4600 block of Monmouth Drive in North Charlotte, which is near the intersection of Interstate 85 and North Graham Street, maps show.
“When officers arrived on scene, they located a damaged bicycle and a seriously injured juvenile bicyclist in the roadway,” CMPD said in a March 29 news release.
“They also located a 2006 Chrysler 300 sedan and its uninjured driver, Khaliyal Elijah Burney, 23, and a passenger. MEDIC responded to the scene and transported Summers to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.”
A preliminary investigation indicates the car was traveling south on Monmouth Drive when the bike “entered the roadway from the yard of 4612 Monmouth,” police said.
“The front left of the Chrysler struck the front of the bicycle, ejecting Summers into the roadway,” CMPD said.
Burney was not impaired, officials said. Investigators are working to determine if speed was a factor for Burney, CMPD said.
He was arrested and has been charged with: driving while license revoked; no liability insurance; failure to register, and driving with a fictitious registration, police said. Court records show Burney lives about six miles northeast of where the accident occurred.
