Woman was killed at 2 am by a family member, CMPD says. Suspect in custody
A gunshot victim died before help arrived early Sunday in a north Charlotte cul-de-sac, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
The body was discovered around 2 a.m. Monday when police were alerted to an assault with a deadly weapon in the 5700 block of Cardington Court, CMPD said in an April 6 news release. The cul-de-sac is located in the Brookfield subdivision, off Sunset Road, maps show.
“Officers located an adult female who was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic,” CMPD said in a social media post. “With the facts known to us at this time, this appears to be a familial relationship between the victim and the suspect. We are not looking for any additional suspects at the time.”
The victim has been identified as Tammy McCollum, 58, and Eddie McCollum, 61, has been charged with first degree murder in connection with her death, officials said. Court records show McCollum lives on Cardington Court.
Tammy McCollum was identified as a minster by the Well Worship Center in Statesville, about a 40-mile drive north from uptown Charlotte.
“We are profoundly broken as we process the tragic events that occurred early Monday morning involving two cherished members of our church family, Eddie and Tammy McCollum,” the church wrote in a statement shared on Facebook.
“While we do not yet have all the answers and must respect the ongoing investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, we stand firmly against violence in any form.”
Investigators have not released details of a motive and have not said how the suspect and victim are related.
