Conspicuous 1964 classic sports car goes missing in North Carolina, sheriff says
It’s tough to miss a 62-year-old Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport convertible tooling along the highway, yet one has gone missing in western North Carolina.
And it’s cherry red, with sleek white upholstery.
“Public assistance needed in locating missing sports car,” the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office wrote in an April 27 Facebook post.
“The car, a 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport (tag: HAZ9233), was last seen parked in the owner’s garage off Bethel Church Road on April 16.”
Investigators didn’t say why it took nearly two weeks to notice the flashy car was no longer in the garage, which is near Marion.
Chevelle convertibles “are some of the best vintage cruisers you can buy,” the classic car site RKMotors.com says. “They’re an ideal combination of all the things guys look for when buying a vintage car,” the site says.
The Chevy model had a short run from 1964 to 1977, and “embodied American muscle cars like no other,” H&H Classic says.
Marion is about a 95-mile drive northwest from Charlotte.
