Suspect on foot runs into path of car on I-77 and is killed, CMPD says
A suspect running from police on Interstate 77 was killed while darting through traffic near the Nations Ford Road exit, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
The identity of the suspect has not been released.
It happened shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, as CMPD was investigating a vehicle theft east of the interstate on Old Pineville Road.
“Officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop; however, the driver refused to stop. In accordance with policy, officers deactivated their emergency equipment and subsequently lost sight of the vehicle,” CMPD said in a May 3 news release.
“A separate officer working an off‑duty assignment ... witnessed the vehicle crash. Following the crash, the two occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot. One suspect was taken into custody. The second suspect ran across the northbound lanes of the interstate into the southbound lanes ... and was struck by a passing motorist.”
MEDIC ambulance personnel arrived and attempted life-saving measures, but the suspect died at the scene.
The driver who collided with the suspect remained at the scene and was “found not to be impaired,” police said.
CMPD noted the stolen vehicle was not being pursued by officers at the time it crashed.
The incident is under investigation, police said.
