A suspect has been arrested in connection with a woman who was set on fire in a Greensboro commercial strip, according to investigators in North Carolina.

Andrew Alan Lewis Mathews, 43, is accused of pouring gas on the victim and intentionally igniting it, the Greensboro Police Department says.

“On May 13, at approximately 4:11 a.m., Greensboro Police, Greensboro Fire, and Guilford County EMS responded to 3700 block of West Gate City Boulevard to a vehicle fire and reports of a woman suffering from burn injuries,” police said in a May 19 news release.

“The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She remains in critical condition.”

Mathews was arrested May 18 and “charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, malicious use of incendiary material to injure, and two counts of burning personal property,” police said.

Details of a motive have not been released.

Court documents report Mathews “poses a danger to the public” and he remains in the Guilford County Jail without bond, officials said. He lives on West Gate City Boulevard, about four miles from where the woman was found, records show.
