Passenger dies when car veers off West W.T. Harris
A 23-year-old man died when the car in which he was a passenger veered off West W.T. Harris Boulevard near Mallard Creek Road and struck a guardrail during heavy rain Monday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Matthew Paul Nemeth was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries after the 9:20 p.m. wreck and was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
Police charged the driver, Luke Tyler Warren, 20, with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
Police said Warren’s 2010 Hyundai Genesis accelerated along the road and then began to fish tail. Warren over-corrected as he tried to control the car, which slid off the right side of the road and struck the guardrail, police said. Warren suffered minor injuries.
Both Nemeth and Warren were wearing seat belts, and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the wreck, police said. The car was traveling too fast for the conditions of the road, and that was a contributing factor, police said.
Police ask that anyone who witnessed the crash call CMPD Detective Kevin Allred at 704-432-2169.
