A woman shot her husband outside Central Elementary School in Statesville, prompting a child who witnessed the shooting to run into the school for help.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. at the school, according to the Iredell Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating.

According to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, a married couple and their three-year-old child went to the school in a truck to pick up their other child. When the older child got into the truck, officials said, the wife pulled out a gun and shot the husband.

The older child then ran into the school for help. The wife and the other child also went into the school and the wife laid down the gun, deputies said. She was in custody late Tuesday but her name hasn’t been released. Investigators also have not released the name of victim.

The husband, who was found on the ground outside his truck, was taken to an area hospital for injuries from the shooting, WBTV reported. His condition is unknown. The wife was taken to the sheriff's office for questioning.

Video from the scene showed police tape marking off an area at an entrance to the school’s parking lot. Investigators were focused on a black pickup truck parked at the exit, the station reported.

School had dismissed for the day and few students were in school at the time. The school was still placed on lockdown as a precaution.
