Man in critical condition after shooting at elementary school in Statesville
A man was in critical condition Wednesday after he was shot by his wife outside Central Elementary School in Statesville Tuesday afternoon, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said.
Investigators “are still tracing all events” that led to the shooting of Michael Andrew Callicut, 33, and no arrest has been made, Campbell said.
“We are still very involved in this investigation and at this point are not releasing the name of the wife due to where we are in the investigation,” Campbell said in a statement. “Our person of interest is cooperating fully with the investigation.”
The shooting, which happened about 3 p.m., prompted a child who witnessed the encounter to run into the school for help.
According to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, a married couple and their 3-year-old child went to the school in a truck to pick up their other child. When the older child got into the truck, investigators said, the wife pulled out a gun and shot the husband.
The older child then ran into the school for help. The wife and the other child also went into the school and the wife laid down the gun, deputies said.
Callicut, who was found on the ground outside his truck, was taken to a hospital. The wife was taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning.
School had dismissed for the day, and few students were in school at the time. The school was still placed on lockdown as a precaution.
