Cyclist dies 4 days after being hit by bus

A man seriously injured when his bike was hit by a bus earlier this week has died, the second cyclist fatality this month.

Charles Adkins, 74, was riding north on Statesville Road near West W.T. Harris Road on Wednesday morning when the collision occurred. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said he turned into the path of a city bus. The bus driver unsuccessfully swerved to avoid Adkins, police say.

Police said Adkins wasn’t wearing a helmet or reflective clothing when the crash happened. They said the bus driver wasn’t impaired and didn’t appear to be speeding.

Holmes was transferred to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment but was pronounced dead around 1 p.m. on Sunday.

On Sept. 13, Alfred “Al” Gorman, 73, was killed in a chain reaction wreck at Parkwood Avenue and Hawthorne Lane.
