A Charlotte student was charged Tuesday after bringing a handgun to school, according to officials with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
The incident happened at Ardrey Kell High School in south Charlotte. A message was sent to parents about the investigation.
"This is assistant principal Bridget Rich. Keeping families aware of incidents that happen on campus is important. Today, a student had a gun on campus," the message read. "It was reported to school administration and quickly investigated. The gun was confiscated and the student will be charged with possession of a handgun on school grounds and will be disciplined according to the code of conduct."
The message continued, "I want to assure you that your child’s safety is of the upmost (sic) importance to us. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us here at the school, 980-343-0860."

The student's name and age have not been released.
Officials have not given any further information.
