Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a man in the Sept. 19 fatal shooting of Melvin Ashby at a home in east Charlotte.
Police said Jose Carlos Cruz, 30, of Charlotte, drove to police headquarters Wednesday night and voluntarily spoke with homicide detectives. He was then arrested, charged with murder and jailed, police said.
Police also interviewed Cruz at police headquarters the night of the shooting. He was later released.
Police said Cruz and Ashby were involved in an altercation that led to the shooting.

Ashby was shot about 7:45 p.m. at a home in the 5500 block of Lantana Avenue, off North Sharon Amity Road. Medic pronounced Ashby dead at the home.
The night before the shooting, police had responded to the same home regarding a domestic disturbance involving Ashby. Police said they determined that no crime had been committed that night, and those at the home told officers they needed no further help.
Police have not said why Cruz was released the first time.
