Police seek driver, occupants of car present when shots fired at officer

Police are asking the public to help them locate the driver or occupants of a burgundy car that may have witnessed shots being fired at an officer last week.

Police said 32-year-old Darryll Douglas Clay of Charlotte began shooting at Officer Michelle Brcik on Friday after the officer stopped to check on his disabled vehicle on Wilkinson Boulevard near uptown.

As Brcik approached the vehicle around 10:30 a.m., she discovered it was stolen during a home invasion last week, police said.

Suddenly, Clay pulled out a firearm and Brcik fired her Taser, police said. It failed to stop Clay. A struggle followed before Brcik and Clay exchanged gunfire, police said.

As Clay fled, he continued to fire his gun in the officer’s direction, police said. During the struggle, the officer suffered minor injuries to her hand, apparently during a fall, police said.

Detectives believe the people in the car were at the scene of the confrontation.

Officers asked the owner, occupants or anyone with information on the people present to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or to call 704-432-TIPS (8477) to speak with a homicide or assault detective.
