Belmont teacher accused of having sexual relationship with student

A teacher at South Point High in Belmont has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, according to Gaston County Police.

Police have not released the name of the female teacher or the male student, and they haven’t given many details. No charges have been filed.

“The allegations include a sexual relationship prior to graduation in the spring of 2015,” Gaston County Police said in brief news release.

Police haven’t said whether the student was a juvenile. In North Carolina, it’s illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student even if that student is over 18.

It’s unclear how long authorities have been investigating the teacher or when charges could be brought.

Gaston County police say the case was initially reported to the Belmont Police Department then transferred to the county department at the request of District Attorney Locke Bell.
