Thomas Allen Cheeks, 28, was charged with one count of first-degree murder on Monday. His stepson, Malachi Deandre Golden, was found dead while in Cheeks’ care in May.

According to the Gaston Gazette, Malachi’s mother found him unresponsive when she kissed him goodnight after returning home from work. Malachi suffered from an undisclosed medical condition that authorities initially believed may have led to his death, the newspaper reported.

The investigation is ongoing and police asked anyone with information to call Gaston County Crime Stoppers at 704-861-8000 or Gaston County Police at 704-866-3320.
