Police, sheriff's deputies and state troopers flooded an area south of Western Boulevard near the I-440 Beltline on Friday morning, capturing two men who had escaped about an hour earlier from a Lincoln County Sheriff's Office transport van that was headed for Central Prison.

Damarcus Da’shaun Dixon, 19, and Logan G. Long, 24, were both shackled when they got out of the van about 9:30 a.m., the searchers were told.

A State Highway Patrol helicopter was sent to the area to help, and a police K-9 was called in to find the prisoners’ track.

Wake County school officials put Combs Elementary School and Athens Drive High School of a Code Yellow lockdown while the search was going on.

State prison records show that Dixon was convicted in Mecklenburg County in September of robbery with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.

Long was convicted last month in Lincoln County of being a habitual felon, stealing a car and possession of stolen goods.

It was not immediately known why they had been returned to the sheriff’s custody.

Lincoln County is in the southwest portion of the state.
