Police identify man shot, killed at east Charlotte apartment complex

Police have identified the man shot and killed in an apartment complex Thursday in east Charlotte.

Jerome Oneil Blakely, 31, died in the shooting on Seigle Avenue at the McAden Park apartments, police said Friday. Police have not announced an arrest in the case.

Officers were called to the apartments for an assault with a deadly weapon call just before 5 p.m. They found Blakely lying near an entryway to an apartment building. Neighbors told WSOC-TV they heard six shots. Blakely died on the way to the hospital.

The shooting was the 56th that police have investigated so far this year. That’s 13 more than all of last year.

It came days after CMPD Chief Kerr Putney told the Charlotte City Council the department needs more officers to bring down crime. Violent crime is up 17.6 percent in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period last year. Police responded to two other shootings Thursday.

Police encouraged anyone with information about the Siegle Avenue shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters are eligible for rewards for information that leads to an arrest. People with information can also call 704-432-TIPS (8477) to speak directly with a homicide detective.
