York man says he was in shootout with masked men trying to break into home

A man told York police he exchanged gunfire with two masked men who attempted to break into his house.

Police were called to the home on the 700 block of Finewright Avenue after receiving reports of shots fired in the area around 7:30 p.m. on the night of Nov. 8. Officers met a 22-year-old man holding a handgun in the front yard of the house, who was detained and handcuffed.

The man told police he and his 15-year-old cousin were inside the house watching football when they saw two men in ski masks and all-black clothing approach the home’s glass front door, one carrying a shotgun and the other a handgun. When the man began to reach for his own weapon, one of the masked men reportedly called out, “We know you got it. Don’t move,” according to the incident report.

Unable to open the locked door, the gunmen reportedly fired into the house through the door. The man told police he picked up a side table to use as a shield and ran down a hallway, where he was able to pull out his own gun and fire back at the men through the front door.

At that point, the masked men ran away toward California Street, and the man followed them outside and fired again.

Officers removed the handcuffs from the man when his cousin confirmed the story.

After getting permission from the homeowner to search the house, officers reportedly discovered marijuana, money, scales and a box of ziplock bags inside the home, which were confiscated. The home was also processed by the forensics team.
