Report: Rock Hill man hit son repeatedly with switch
A Rock Hill man was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child after hitting his son with a switch, police said Monday.
Jeffrey Carter, 32, was arrested this weekend and remained in the York County Detention Center on Monday under $10,000 bond.
Rock Hill police officers were called to Oakdale Elementary School on Nov. 3 after school employees notified the guidance counselor that a 10-year-old student had bruising on him, according to a police report. The boy told the counselor that he “got in trouble at home, and his father ... hit him with a switch” the day before, the report states.
The boy had several scratches and bruising on his face, several scratches across his back and a large bruise on his right cheek, police said. The boy told officers he was afraid of his father and did not want to go home.
The state Department of Social Services took custody of the boy while police began an investigation.
According to the report, the incident took place at 1128 Amelia Ave., which is where 3-year-old Sa’Vion Barrow accidentally shot and killed himself Nov. 15 after getting his hands on a gun in the home. It’s not clear if Carter lives at the home.
“It’s a totally unrelated incident,” said Capt. Mark Bollinger, a Rock Hill police spokesman.
Sa’Vion’s death remains under investigation. Bollinger said last week that investigators are “allowing the family to grieve their loss.”
