Charlotte man charged in assaults on jail officers

A Charlotte man was charged in connection with assaults Monday night on several Lincoln County sheriff’s detention officers.

Officers went to the cell of Johnathan Leonard McCorkle, 41, after learning he was threatening to kill himself.

As they tried to move him to a more secure cell, McCorkle bit detention Sgt. Roger Jones on his right forearm and then spit blood on Jones and two other officers, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

McCorkle was charged with malicious conduct by a prisoner and assault on a detention officer, both felonies. He was taken before a magistrate and given an additional $100,000 bail. He had been in jail on a charge of speeding to elude arrest.
