Matthews man sentenced to prison for tax evasion

A Matthews man was sentenced this week to a year and a day in federal prison for tax evasion.

Sammie Marks, 42, owned Marks Metal and Salvage of Charlotte.

Prosecutors said he failed to list on his IRS tax forms about $1.1 million in checks and cash he deposited into his personal bank account from customers and his company.

As a result, Marks had additional tax liability of $158,614, according to court records.

Chief U.S. District Judge Frank Whitney ordered Marks to pay the $158,614 as restitution to the IRS.
