3 men charged in alleged Huntersville dogfighting operation

Huntersville police arrested three men this week on charges related to dogfighting.

The arrests came two months after police seized 23 dogs, along with tools and equipment used in dogfighting, from a property in the 16100 block of Statesville Road.

Police executed a search warrant of the property Sept. 29with help from members of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care and Control Division.

Police charged Sean Lennell Burton of Davidson and Michael Ray Cherry of Huntersville, both 44, with 16 counts each of felony dog fighting and baiting and one count each of restraining dogs in a cruel manner; and Rondale Everett Jetton of Charlotte, 37, was charged with four counts of cruelty to animals. Burton was jailed Friday on $33,000 bail. Cherry is free on $49,500 bail, and Jetton is free on $4,000 bail, records show.
