Rowan County officer accused of providing drugs, tobacco to inmates
A Rowan County sheriff’s detention officer was fired and jailed this week after being accused of providing marijuana and tobacco to inmates.
Officer Dwayne Smith, 26, of Concord, was arrested Tuesday and charged with furnishing a controlled substance, marijuana, to a prisoner, a felony, and misdemeanor furnishing contraband, tobacco, to a prisoner.
Smith was transferred to Iredell County jail on $15,000 bail, pending a first court appearance in Rowan County District Court, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said. That appearance hasn’t been scheduled.
Smith became the focus of an internal investigation in December, the sheriff’s office said.
