Pedestrian hit, killed in South End; driver charged with DWI
A woman walking along South Boulevard was killed Sunday when she stepped into the path of a car being driven by an impaired driver, police said.
The collision happened about 5 p.m. on South Boulevard near Remount Road in front of the Off Broadway shoe warehouse.
Police identified the dead pedestrian as Kelli Sue Putman, 28. Investigators say she was walking along the sidewalk on South Boulevard when she stepped in front of a 2014 Audi S4 traveling south and being driven by Gregory Alan Wheeling, 30.
Putman was struck by the Audi, which went off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Wheeling was arrested and charged with DWI and aggravated felony death by vehicle.
He and three passengers in the Audi weren’t injured. Wheeling’s bail information wasn’t immediately available late Sunday.
