A man wielding a knife was fatally shot by police in Catawba County Thursday night.

Around 8 p.m., two Maiden police officers went to a call regarding a man cutting himself in a home on Old Park Road. They found 35-year-old Alijah Jackson barricaded in a downstairs bathroom “covered in blood holding a knife,” police said.

Officers ordered Jackson to drop the knife. Jackson ignored the commands and lunged at officers, “making slashing and stabbing motions,” police said.

Police shot Jackson. Catawba County EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

“Officers were confronted with a deadly situation and had to defend themselves,” Maiden Police Chief Tracy Ledford said.

The SBI is conducting an investigation regarding the two officers involved, per standard protocol. The officers are in paid administrative leave.
