Gastonia man accused of sexually assaulting a child

A Gastonia man was jailed this week on child sexual assault charges.

Gaston County police charged Thomas Edward Welch Jr., 38, with statutory sex offense with a child under 15 and indecent liberties with a child.

Police said the charges stem from acts that occurred this month.

Welch was in the Gaston County Jail on Saturday on $100,000 bail.
