Pedestrian struck by car, killed in north Charlotte

A Charlotte woman was struck by a vehicle and killed in north Charlotte Wednesday night.

Police identified the victim as 32-year-old Kameka Lashay Collins.

The driver of a 1999 Acura coupe told investigators that he was in the left lane of West Sugar Creek Road when a pedestrian darted in front of his car. The man said he swerved his car to the right, but still struck the woman.

Police say Collins was crossing the road at a place not marked for pedestrians and was wearing dark clothes. The driver was not speeding and wasn’t impaired by alcohol. He has not been charged with a crime.

The fatal crash is still under investigation. Police ask anyone with information about the crash to CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit at 704-432-2169.
