Shots fired at plainclothes officers in east Charlotte near site of 2007 police shooting

Someone fired gunshots at plainclothes police officers Wednesday in east Charlotte near the scene of a deadly police shooting nine years ago.

The incident began around 8 p.m., when officers in the North Tryon division received a call that someone was shooting a gun and had assaulted a family member. As the officers were responding, they received more information saying the suspect was on Milton Road near Barrington Drive.

Plainclothes officers in the area saw a person shoot a gun into the air and later run across the street with another person. The officers followed, and as they were getting out of their vehicles, the person fired more rounds and fled into the woods.

The officers chased the suspects on foot and took both into custody. They found a gun nearby.

The officers were not injured.

Photos from the scene showed a large police presence and crime scene investigators taking pictures of evidence.

Police have not identified the officers or the people in custody.

In March 2007, Officers Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton were shot and killed near the same intersection in what was then the Timber Ridge Apartments. They were responding to a domestic call unrelated to the man who shot them.

Demeatrius Montgomery was arrested shortly afterward. In 2010, he was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in the killings.
