Sun Valley High student accused of setting fires at school

A Sun Valley High student faces felony charges in connection with small fires set at the school last week.

Union County sheriff’s investigators charged Jayce Alexander Kear, 17, with three counts of burning of personal property. Kear was released to his parents after being processed at the Union County Jail.

Two fires were in a restroom and the other one in a trash can. The fires extinguished themselves, and no students were injured, investigators said.

Deputies, meanwhile, have identified a suspect in connection with graffiti that contained threatening language at the school, Sheriff Eddie Cathey said. Felony charges are forthcoming, he said.

“I want to ensure parents and our community that we work closely with school officials every day on our campuses to protect our students,” Cathey said in a statement. “We take these matters seriously and will not tolerate harm coming to our schools or our students.”
