Skull stolen from casket in Hickory

Hickory police said a skull was stolen from a casket at Oakwood Cemetery this week.

A city worker discovered vandalism to a mausoleum at the cemetery about 8 a.m. Wednesday. A casket had been removed and opened, police said.

The worker had last been at the cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Nothing else was removed from the mausoleum, police said.

The casket was that of a man who died in 2008, police said.

Drum’s Funeral Home, which handled the original burial, is storing the casket until repairs can be completed on the mausoleum.

Oakwood Cemetery is at 522 Fourth St. NW.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Hickory Police Department at 828-328-5551 or police Sgt. Dustin Nowatka at 828-261-2624.
