An Indian Trail man who served time for bank robbery and providing false information to the FBI was arrested along with his wife after drugs and a handgun were found in their car during a traffic stop this week.

Shabazz Emmanuel McCarthan, 30, was charged with possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was jailed on $100,000 bail.

His wife, Devon Brittany McCarthan, 25, was charged with the same drug offenses as her husband. She was jailed on $20,000 bail.

Shabazz McCarthan was released from federal custody in August and was on three years of supervised release. His supervision was transferred from New Jersey to North Carolina.

During this week’s traffic stop near Indian Trail, Union County sheriff’s deputies seized 14 grams of powder cocaine, several ounces of marijuana, less than a gram of hash and the handgun, Sheriff Eddie Cathey said.
