Police say a man whose body was found inside a burning apartment in west Salisbury early Sunday was a victim of homicide.

Investigators with the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation have been called in to assist in the killing of Joseph David Walker, 37.

Walker lived at 632 Hamilton Drive, where firefighters were summoned about 6:45 a.m. because someone saw smoke pouring out of a home. The apartment is at the Alexander Place Apartments, near where Jake Alexander Boulevard meets Interstate 85 on the city’s west side.

Police in Salisbury haven’t said what led them to deem Walker’s death a homicide. It was also unclear if police had determined a suspect in the killing or had made an arrest.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Salisbury Police Department at 704-638-5333 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245.
