Charlotte man arrested on I-85 by off-duty officer who stopped to help

A Charlotte man was arrested on a drug charge Monday after his 1989 BMW spun out on Interstate 85 in China Grove, attracting the attention of a police officer who was on his way home.

A Salisbury Police officer and a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper came to assist when the vehicle driven by Jahid Ny-Shaun Thompson, 23, came to rest sideways on the side of the interstate.

The officers “detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle,” according to a report from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

A search of the vehicle turned up about 1 pound of marijuana in two vacuum sealed bags, which were stored in the trunk, according to the report.

Thompson was charged with possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana and one felony charge, according to the report. Bond was set at $50,000.

Thompson has a case pending in Lee County for possession with intent to sell/deliver a Schedule IV substance, according to the report. The case stems from an incident in January, the report said.
