Woman faces 1st court appearance in Charlotte double fatality

A woman faces a first court appearance Friday in connection with a fatal wreck that killed her 6-year-old son and another woman.

Police accuse Crystal Marie Day, 33, of grabbing the steering wheel of the car as it sped on East Independence Boulevard Monday night. Police said Day was arguing with the driver, Vanessa Annette Adams, also 33. Day was the front-seat passenger.

When Day grabbed the wheel, police said, the westbound 1999 Toyota Solara veered to the right, hit a guardrail and overturned on the road.

Day was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. Police charged her with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of child neglect.

She was arrested and jailed on $300,000 bail Thursday afternoon after being released from the hospital, jail records show.

Neither Day nor Adams had seat belts on, and Day’s son, Gianni Espinoza, was not properly restrained in a child seat, police said.

The wreck happened shortly before 9 p.m. in the 7500 block of East Independence Boulevard, near Matthews.
