Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Tuesday charged a teacher at Countryside Montessori School in connection with sexual assaults against two girls when they were seniors at the school during the 2012-’13 school year.
Police arrested Jarrett Murgolo, 35, on two counts of indecent liberties with a student and one count of sexual activity with a student.
Police said they began investigating the case April 19.
Murgolo voluntarily went to police headquarters on Tuesday morning where he was interviewed by detectives.
Based on information and evidence gathered during the investigation, he was then arrested, charged and taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. He is free on $45,000 bail, jail records show.
Police have not said whether the assaults happened at the school or off campus.
The school’s website lists Murgolo as supervising lead teacher of the secondary program at Countryside’s Mallard Creek campus. The campus is on Mallard Creek Road in the University City area. Murgolo teaches history at the school.
The school did not immediately respond to phone and email messages requesting comment.
In a note to parents, Countryside board chairman Todd Nuccio said someone will replace Murgolo for the rest of the year.
“Because this is a confidential personnel matter, we are unable to share any details,” Nuccio said. “Please know, however, that this matter does not involve any current students at any grade level.”
