Police in Newton have taken a teenager into custody for allegedly making a threat against Newton-Conover High School.

James Driver, 16, is charged with making a false report regarding mass violence. He was booked into Catawba County jail with bond set at $10,000.

Just before 3 p.m., Newton Police received a report about a former student threatening to use a gun or another deadly weapon at the school. When officers got to the school on West 15th Street, administrators had already put the school on security lockdown.

Officers searched the school, systematically clearing each classroom and searching students and teachers, but didn’t find anything suspicious.
