Son calls police to report mom’s sex assault
Police have charged a Charlotte man with sexual assault after the victim’s son told officers his mother was inside a home being attacked.
Charles Fitzgerald Harris, 44, is charged with six counts of rape, eleven counts of sex offense and two counts of kidnapping. He was also served unrelated warrants for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Just after 7 a.m. Wednesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were called to Polk Street because of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, a boy told officers that his mom was inside the house being assaulted.
Officers went into the home and saw the victim being assaulted by a man later identified as Harris, according to a police news release. Officers pulled the suspect off the victim and placed him in handcuffs.
Investigators later learned that the victim and suspect knew each other for two months. The woman had asked Harris for a ride to the airport. But on the way to the airport, police say, the suspect pulled out a knife and sexually assaulted the woman. He then drove mother and son to the home on Polk Street where the sexual assaults continued.
Police say the investigation is ongoing. They encouraged anyone with information about the alleged crime to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
